C'est décidé, je m'expatrie

An entrepreneur has decided to leave. Before packing his bags, he puts seven countries sold as paradises to the test on the ground. We are looking for the broadcasters, co-producers and funders who will make the journey with us.

The project

Does the entrepreneur's paradise really exist, and at what cost?

A French entrepreneur leaves everything behind to find a country where you can still build a business, earn a living and raise your children without going broke. Camera on his shoulder, he scouts seven countries and asks the same question everywhere.

Every year, thousands of entrepreneurs and families consider leaving. Social media promises run on a loop: 0% tax in Dubai, 10% in Andorra, easy residency in Paraguay. Almost nobody goes to check on the ground, with a family in mind and a real budget.

Tax regimes change fast. In Portugal, the NHR, long presented as Europe's El Dorado, has been closed to newcomers since 2024. That is exactly what the series is about: the end of ready-made recipes, and the need to go and see for yourself.

“I'm not playing a role. I'm doing this scouting for my own family. Viewers aren't watching a presenter investigate: they're watching someone make a decision.” Erick Alexis-Michaux, writer-director-producer

This is not a series about tax tricks. It is a travel documentary with real personal stakes. Each episode confronts the promise with reality: the cost of housing and schools, bureaucracy, inequality, isolation.

Narrative structure

A four-part structure, the series' signature

01

The journey

Arrival, the first day, the shock of discovery.

02

Work

Coworking spaces, clients, numbers: the reality of working there.

03

Daily life

Family, school, groceries, leisure, safety.

04

The tax lesson

A 2 to 3-minute explainer with simple graphics.

End of episode

“Could I live here, yes or no?”

The seven episodes

Seven destinations, one question

Shooting order: Portugal → Bulgaria → Andorra → Dubai → Thailand → Panama → Paraguay → France

Yellow tram in a narrow Lisbon streetPilot
01

Portugal · Lisbon, Porto

The closest dream, and the most fragile. In the country every French person names first, the tax door has closed: the NHR is gone, the IFICI only applies to a handful of profiles, and property prices have soared. A pilot with the best cost-to-impact ratio to test the format.

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia at dusk
02

Bulgaria · Sofia

The European Union at 10%, and a three-room flat for the price of a Paris studio.

Andorra la Vella valley in the Pyrenees
03

Andorra

The little safe of the Pyrenees, as long as you accept living in a valley.

Dubai Marina towers at blue hour
04

Dubai · UAE

Zero income tax, and a social contract that has nothing in common with ours.

Open-air café overlooking rice fields in Chiang Mai
05

Low-cost Asia · Thailand, Vietnam

Living well on €1,500 a month, and a tax question that is never settled.

Colourful Casco Viejo balconies and the Panama City skyline
06

Panama

The openly territorial tax haven, and a reputation to handle with care.

Riverside promenade in Asunción at sunset
07

Paraguay · Asunción

The 10-10-10 rule, in the most discreet country of the series.

And finally, the decision.

An on-screen comparison (tax, cost of living, safety, climate, schooling) and Erick's final choice. The moment viewers have been waiting for since episode one.

The French counterpoint

A series that doesn't sell the dream. It puts it to the test.

In each episode, a French tax official filmed at Bercy and a French tax lawyer confirm, qualify or contradict what was said on the ground.

This adversarial view makes the series a safe programme for a channel, on a tax topic often handled in a partisan way. It remains illuminating for French, Belgian, Swiss, Canadian and French overseas audiences.

Production

A light crew, high production value

Production is deliberately light, so the budget goes on screen rather than on logistics.

Two people, eight shoots

The writer-director and an audiovisual technician make all eight trips. A local interpreter-fixer is hired in Portugal, Panama and Paraguay.

The production's own equipment

Two Sony cameras (FX3 and FX30), two stabilised mini-cameras, a drone and two microphones. The equipment belongs to Media Prod TV.

Six days per country

One travel day and five shooting days in each country, then three days in Paris for the French counterpoint.

Partnerships sought
